About the institute

A nonprofit at the frontier of computing

We are a research organization founded on a simple conviction: the technologies reshaping our world should be developed openly, ethically, and in the hands of those who will inherit them.

Who we are

Rigorous science, conducted in the open

OS Research Labs is a nonprofit research organization based in Mequon, Wisconsin. We conduct and support research across four connected frontiers — quantum computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, and neural computation — with a shared commitment to openness and the public good.

Unlike a purely commercial lab, our incentives point toward sharing. We publish our methods, release our tools, and confront the difficult ethical questions these technologies raise rather than sidestepping them. We believe that is how trustworthy science is built.

Just as importantly, we exist to bring people in. Through internships, mentorship, and collaboration with university partners, we give students genuine research experience — the kind that prepares them to serve and lead.

Our commitments

  • Publish research, tools, and datasets openly
  • Center ethics and safety in every project
  • Create hands-on opportunities for students
  • Share negative results, not only successes
  • Build a regional research ecosystem in Wisconsin
  • Collaborate across universities and industry

What guides us

Principles of the institute

Four principles that shape how we choose problems, run projects, and share what we learn.

01

Open by default

We publish our tools, datasets, and results — including the negative ones — so the whole community can build on them.

02

Ethics first

We confront the hard questions these technologies raise, designing for transparency, safety, and human benefit.

03

Students at the center

Real research experience changes lives. We create hands-on opportunities that prepare people to lead.

04

Rooted in Wisconsin

We're proud to help build a regional ecosystem for quantum, AI, and robotics right here in the Midwest.

Our history

How we got here

2022

OS Research Labs is founded

A small group of researchers set out to pursue open, ethical research in quantum, AI, and robotics as a nonprofit institute.

2024

Research programs take shape

Our four core research areas mature, and the first open tools and datasets are released to the community.

2025

Partnership with Concordia University Wisconsin

We join forces with Concordia's AI & Quantum Innovation Lab to pursue joint research and create student internships.

2026

Joining the Wisconsin Quantum Alliance

We become a member of the statewide alliance, helping grow Wisconsin's quantum workforce and startup ecosystem.

The people behind the research

Faculty, graduate researchers, student fellows, and advisors working together across disciplines.
